Aufgrund der begrenzten Produktion und Ressourcen wollten die Leute Waren oder Dienstleistungen anbieten, die sie nicht besaßen, und begannen, Waren gegen sich selbst auszutauschen. Später, mit der Entwicklung des Geschäftsbereichs und der Zunahme der Vielfalt von Handelswaren, wurde ein gemeinsames Werkzeug für Veränderungen benötigt. Also, Brot, Gold, Bohnen, Perlen, wie Waren, Geld und fing an, als ein Austauschmittel verwendet zu werden.

Pek çok tarihçi ticaretin, iletişimin doğuşunu takiben takas yöntemiyle başlamış olduğunu düşünmektedir. Ticaretin ortaya çıkış nedeni, insanın ihtiyaçlarını karşılama arzusudur. Üretimin ve kaynakların kısıtlı olmasından dolayı insan, kendinde olmayan mal veya hizmeti bir başkasından sağlamak istemiş, bunun için de kendinde bulunan mallar ile değiş tokuş yapmaya başlamıştır. Daha sonra iş bölümünün gelişmesi ve ticari malların çeşitlerinin artması ile, ortak bir değişim aracına ihtiyaç duyulmaya başlamıştır. Böylelikle ekmek, altın, fasulye, inci gibi mallar, para gibi bir değişim aracı olarak kullanılmaya başlamıştır.
