nickname

Beiname

A nickname is an additional person name, which is given to a person to name it more precisely. In contrast to accommodation, the nickname is an official, indispensable component of the name, but this distinction is not always made in this sense in the literature, and in the development of the name, the boundaries are often fluid. The Namenkunde speaks also for the medieval time of surnames, which characterize the respective carrier person and which later often become family names. The epithet, as the cognomen, is the third component of the regular Roman name.
