An aryl group is an organic-chemical radical having an aromatic backbone. Aryl is thus the general term for a monovalent atomic group derived from aromatic hydrocarbons by withdrawal of a hydrogen atom bound to the ring. Most aryl radicals are derived from benzene, the simplest aryl group is the phenyl group,. Aryl residues can occur either as a fragment of a molecule or as an unstable free radical. Aryl cations are formed as reaction-reactive intermediates in the elimination of nitrogen from aryl-diazonium salts. Aromatic alcohols are formed during the so-called boiling-up of aryl-diazonium salts. Aryl anions also occur as reactive intermediates in organic syntheses and are more stable than aryl cations. The term "aryl group" is used above all when formulating in general terms and not specifying in detail which aromatic group is involved. In contrast to aryl groups, the term alkyl groups is used to denote a radical which is not aromatic.

Eine Arylgruppe ist ein organisch-chemischer Rest mit einem aromatischen Grundgerüst. Aryl ist somit die allgemeine Bezeichnung für eine einwertige Atomgruppe, die sich von aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen durch Entzug eines an den Ring gebundenen Wasserstoffatoms ableiten. Die meisten Arylreste leiten sich vom Benzol ab, die einfachste Arylgruppe ist die Phenylgruppe, . Arylreste können entweder als Fragment eines Moleküls oder als instabiles freies Radikal auftreten. Aryl-Kationen entstehen als reaktionsfreudige Zwischenprodukte bei der Stickstoffabspaltung aus Aryl-Diazoniumsalzen, beim sogenannten Verkochen von Aryl-Diazoniumsalzen bilden sich aromatische Alkohole. Aryl-Anionen treten ebenso als reaktive Zwischenprodukte in organischen Synthesen auf und sind stabiler als Aryl-Kationen. Die Bezeichnung Arylgruppe wird vor allem dann verwendet, wenn man allgemein formuliert und nicht genauer spezifizieren will, um welche aromatische Gruppe es sich handelt. Im Gegensatz zu Arylgruppen wird der Begriff Alkylgruppen verwendet, um einen Rest zu bezeichnen, der nicht aromatisch ist.
