carbonyl

Carbonylgruppe

The carbonyl group, also CO group, is a component of many organic chemical compounds. It is characterized by a carbon atom carrying a double-bonded oxygen atom; The similar-sounding carboxy group additionally has a hydroxy group on the same carbon atom, whereby a carboxylic acid is formed. If a molecule contains a carbonyl group, it is also referred to as a carbonyl compound. If the carbonyl compound carries only alkyl radicals, the grouping is also referred to as keto group. The monovalent organic radical, formally derived from, for example, For example, an organic acid after cleavage of the hydroxy group, is termed acyl group. An example of an acyl group derived from acetic acid is the acetyl group. The electrophilic force of the carbonyl C atom and thus the reactivity of the compound are decisively influenced by the properties of the substituent. Substituents with -I effect increase the reactivity, + I and + M substituents reduce them.
