Contus or precise Contus sarmaticus, the Latin and Kontos is the Greek term for an extremely long type of lance, used by Roman and Byzantine cavalry. Contus lances were between three and five meters long and were carried on horseback in the fight ambidextrous. The Contus lance was an invention of the Iranian Sarmatians and Parthians, and was adopted by the Romans in Late Antiquity along with the principle of cataphractus, which made extensive use of this type of lance. Contour riders were called Contarii. The first special units of Contarii appeared in the Trajan period around 100 AD. The Contarii can be either heavily armored Cataphracti, Clibanarii, or slightly armored riders. The typical image of a contarius is shown by the representations of Saint George, which is shown on horseback with a long Contus lance on both hands.

Contus oder präziser Contus sarmaticus ist die lateinische und Kontos die griechische Bezeichnung für eine extrem lange Lanzenart, die von römischen und byzantinischen Kavalleristen verwendet wurde. Contus-Lanzen waren zwischen drei und fünf Meter lang und wurden zu Pferde im Kampf beidhändig geführt. Die Contus-Lanze war eine Erfindung der iranischen Sarmaten und Parther und wurde in der Spätantike zusammen mit dem Prinzip des Kataphraktes von den Römern übernommen, die extensiv von dieser Lanzenart Gebrauch machten. Contustragende Reiter wurden als Contarii bezeichnet. Die ersten speziellen Einheiten von Contarii tauchten in trajanischer Zeit gegen 100 n. Chr. auf. Bei den Contarii kann es sich sowohl um schwer gepanzerte Cataphracti, Clibanarii als auch um leicht gepanzerte Reiter handeln. Das typische Bild eines Contarius zeigen die Darstellungen des Heiligen Georg, der meist in römischer Uniform zu Pferde mit einer langen Contus-Lanze beidhändig einen Drachen erstechend gezeigt wird.
