The alpine violets are a plant cultivar in the subfamily of the Myrsinengewächse within the family of the Primelgewächse. This species contains about 22 species, most of which are native to the Mediterranean. Only one species, the European alpine violet is widely distributed in the Alps, according to which the genus is named in German. The well-known potted plant is the room-alpine violet, which has its roots in Kleinasien, from where it came to Europe in the 17th century.
