A dropper or virus dropper is a stand-alone executable program file, which is used for the first-time release of a computer virus. Computer viruses are not a stand-alone executable programs, but attack only parasitic other program code. For this reason, a computer virus needs a special carrier program, the Virusdropper, for its initial execution. The dropper as such is a trojan horse. An on-access scanner of an antivirus program can heuristically recognize that new machine code is to be imported into an executable file, thus preventing the virus from being issued on the system in question. Another modified type of dropper, which merely stores a malware in the temporary memory, is called injector. This version is somewhat more dangerous because a user can not directly detect the malicious code. Droppers are often included in files from swap exchanges and camouflage themselves, for example, as no-cd cracks.

Ein Dropper oder Viren-Dropper ist eine eigenständig ausführbare Programm-Datei, die der meist erstmaligen Freisetzung eines Computervirus dient. Computerviren sind keine eigenständigen lauffähigen Programme, sondern befallen nur parasitär anderen Programmcode. Aus diesem Grund benötigt ein Computervirus für seine erstmalige Ausführung ein spezielles Trägerprogramm, den Virusdropper. Der Dropper als solches ist ein trojanisches Pferd. Ein On-Access-Scanner eines Antivirenprogramms kann heuristisch erkennen, dass neuer Maschinencode in eine ausführbare Datei eingeschleust werden soll und so verhindern, dass der Virus auf dem betreffenden System abgesetzt wird. Eine weitere abgeänderte Art eines Droppers, die lediglich eine Malware im temporären Speicher ablegt, nennt sich Injektor. Diese Version ist etwas gefährlicher, weil ein User den Schadcode nicht direkt bemerken kann. Dropper sind oft in Dateien aus Tauschbörsen enthalten und tarnen sich zum Beispiel als No-CD-Cracks.
