The Els is a vermont-laden herbal bitter or herbal schnapps, which is not burned. It is mainly known from the area of ​​Monschau in the Eifel, but it also has its tradition in the Niederrhein region and neighboring countries. Der Els ist ein wermutlastiger Kräuterbitter oder Kräuterschnaps, der nicht gebrannt wird. Er ist vor allem bekannt aus dem Raum Monschau in der Eifel, hat aber auch in der Region Niederrhein und in den benachbarten Niederlanden seine Tradition. Er kann auf zweierlei Weise hergestellt werden: als „Aufgesetzter“ im privaten Bereich oder gewerbemäßig durch Herstellung und Mischung eines Destillates. Das Produkt ist traditionell in fast allen Wirtschaften Monschaus und in der näheren Umgebung erhältlich. Die Ursprünge könnten im Kloster Reichenstein liegen. Ursprünglich soll er ein Tee fürs Vieh gewesen sein, für Kühe mit Appetitlosigkeit. Nach dem Motto: was dem Vieh hilft, ist auch gut für den Menschen entstand der Els mit den gleichen Zutaten, aber auf Alkoholbasis. Els ist kein geschützter, ortsgebundener Name, daher wird er zum Beispiel auch hier verwendet: ▪ Kalterherberger Els ▪ Monschauer Els ▪ Raerener Els ▪ Vossenacker Els ▪ Xantener Els ▪ Kevelaerer Moosbur Els In Beek/Limburg Niederlande wird Aels hergestellt; ähnlich ist auch der Tilburger Kräuterschnaps.
