Votivations are due to a vow as a symbolic sacrifice, especially for the salvation from an emergency and often in a cultic place presented objects. In the Catholic Church, particularly in the Baroque, votive images were used, which represented an emergency situation, and were provided with the written reference ex voto. The vow leading to a votivation is called a votation, the person depositing the vow as a votant. Votivschatz is the name of both the totality of the Votivgaben collected in a cultic place as well as an archaeological find, which mainly consists of Votivgaben.

Votivgaben sind aufgrund eines Gelübdes als symbolisches Opfer insbesondere für die Rettung aus einer Notlage und häufig an einer kultischen Stätte dargebrachte Gegenstände. In der katholischen Kirche waren besonders im Barock Votivbilder verbreitet, welche eine Notsituation darstellten, und mit dem schriftlichen Hinweis ex voto versehen waren. Das zu einer Votivgabe führende Gelübde bezeichnet man als Votation, die das Gelübde ablegende Person als Votanten. Als Votivschatz bezeichnet man sowohl die Gesamtheit der an einem kultischen Ort gesammelten Votivgaben als auch einen archäologischen Fund, der hauptsächlich aus Votivgaben besteht.
