fasces

Fascis

A fascis, plural fasces, is a rod bundle, in which a hatchet is stuck. Fasces were the official symbol of the highest rulers of the Roman Empire and were presented to them by their officials, which is why they are also known as licon bundles. More recently, the symbol has been used in states that refer to ancient Rome, such as the United States of America, Republican France, and fascist Italy.
