They differ by the nature of the carbonyl function. If a keto group is involved, ketoheptoses are referred to as ketoheptoses, and in an aldehyde group they are called aldoheptoses. There are 32 stereoisomeric aldoheptoses and 16 stereoisomeric ketoheptoses.
