gall

Pflanzengalle

Plant glands or cecidia are anomalies in plant growth caused by foreign organisms. The science of planting is also called cecidology. A generally accepted definition of the term "plant gall" is not yet available. Various experiments have already been carried out to comprehensively describe the galling of plants. The definition of Ernst Küster from 1953, which is also frequently used in contemporary literature, defines plant galls as "products of abnormal growth", which are produced by the "action of animal or plant parasites and give them the breeding ground for them." Nowadays there are also many other definitions that describe the phenomenon of gall formation. Due to the large variety of gallerges, however, a clear definition is difficult, since some gall types, such as, for example, stumps in the formation of individual organs, are not mentioned in most definitions.
