Manihot

Manihot is a plant genus from the family of the wolfsmilk plants. Trivial names for these plant species are Maniok, Mandioka, Kassava or in Latin America Yuca. In the genus Manihot, about 60 to 100 species are distinguished. Some species are grown in the tropics as starch feeders. All cultivated species are named with the above name, depending on regions. The most important species is manioc. The cultivation of the plant is widespread because of its starchy root. Originally from today's Brazil and Paraguay, it was already used by the natives to eat their food. In the meantime, it is grown worldwide in many parts of the tropics and subtropics.
