Down syndrome is a syndrome in humans in which the entire 21st chromosome or parts thereof are present in triplicate by a gene commutation. Therefore, another common term is trisomy 21. The original, but now obsolete due to the derogatory undertone, was Mongolism. People with Down syndrome usually have typical physical characteristics and are usually so impaired in their cognitive abilities that they are mentally handicapped. The tripling of the corresponding genetic material occurs through an unusual distribution process during cell division in the stage of meiosis or mitosis, which leads to the emergence of additional genetic material of the 21st chromosome. This leads to different degrees of delayed cognitive and physical development. The different forms of trisomy 21 arise spontaneously and can only be inherited if the mother already has the Down syndrome. However, a down syndrome can occur in a familial manner, provided that a balanced translocation of a 21st chromosome is present in a parent without Down syndrome.

Das Down-Syndrom ist ein Syndrom beim Menschen, bei dem durch eine Genommutation das gesamte 21. Chromosom oder Teile davon dreifach vorliegen . Daher lautet eine weitere übliche Bezeichnung Trisomie 21. Die ursprüngliche, heute aber aufgrund des abwertenden Untertons veraltete Bezeichnung war Mongolismus. Menschen mit Down-Syndrom weisen in der Regel typische körperliche Merkmale auf und sind in ihren kognitiven Fähigkeiten meist so beeinträchtigt, dass sie geistig behindert sind. Die Verdreifachung des entsprechenden Erbgutes geschieht durch einen unüblichen Verteilungsprozess während der Zellteilung im Stadium der Meiose oder Mitose, die zum Entstehen von zusätzlichem Erbmaterial des 21. Chromosoms führt. Diese führt in unterschiedlichem Maße zu einer verzögerten kognitiven und körperlichen Entwicklung. Die verschiedenen Formen der Trisomie 21 entstehen spontan und können nur vererbt werden, wenn die Mutter bereits selbst das Down-Syndrom hat. Eine Form des Down-Syndroms kann allerdings familiär gehäuft vorkommen, sofern eine balancierte Translokation eines 21. Chromosoms bei einem Elternteil ohne Down-Syndrom vorliegt.
