The monotype is a jig, which was invented in 1897 by the American engineer Tolbert Lanston. In contrast to the Linotype setting machine, the setting and pouring operations are not combined in one machine. The setter sits on the so-called button, a mechanical keyboard, whose inputs are stored on a perforated strip. The perforated strip is separated into the casting machine, which does not - like the Linotype setting machine - poured complete lines, but single letters, which nevertheless line to a line and leave the machine completely exhausted, so that the lines can be put together into print blocks , In addition to the described normal monotype casting machine, there was also the Monotype-Supra, a complete casting machine for large cone fonts of 14 to 72 point font size. Räumlich davon getrennt wird der Lochstreifen in die Gießmaschine eingegeben, die nicht – wie die Linotype-Setzmaschine – komplette Zeilen, sondern einzelne Lettern gießt, die gleichwohl zu einer Zeile gereiht und fertig ausgeschlossen die Maschine verlassen, so dass die Zeilen zu Druckstöcken zusammengestellt werden können. Neben der beschriebenen normalen Monotype-Gießmaschine, gab es noch die Monotype-Supra, eine Komplettgießmaschine für Großkegel-Schriften von 14 bis 72 Punkt Schriftgröße. Durch Umbauten war sie auch für den Guss von Blindmaterial, Regletten, Linien und Unterlegstegen einsetzbar. Der erste sogenannte Typ A wurde in Europa kaum eingesetzt, erst der Typ C und ab 1910 der Typ D sorgten für die große Verbreitung.
