WHAT DOES NETSUKE MEAN IN GERMAN?

Netsuke

Netsuke are small carved figures from Japan. They served as a counterweight in the attachment of a Sagemono, For example, an inrō, a flat, small, multi-part lacquered canon on the Obi of the bagless kimono. Preferred material was originally root wood, ivory, but also whale and walrus teeth, wood especially beech tree, bamboo, staghorn, and more. They emerged in the late 17th century with the strengthening of the bourgeoisie and lasted until the 1880s, when the kimono became out of use as an everyday clothing item. Mythological figures, especially the seven lucky gods, animals, flowers, fruits, as well as objects and scenes from everyday life, were depicted. One of the famous Netsuke blunders was Masanao from the Kyoto school.
