Die Silbe ist ein grammatischer beziehungsweise linguistischer Begriff, der eine Einheit aus einem oder mehreren aufeinanderfolgenden Lauten bezeichnet, die sich in einem Zug aussprechen lassen und so eine Sprecheinheit bilden. Die genaue Abgrenzung der Silbe kann wissenschaftlich nicht eindeutig definiert werden. Sie stellt die kleinste Lautgruppe im natürlichen Sprechfluss dar. Die Silbe bildet eine rein lautliche Einheit, die unabhängig von ihrer Bedeutung gebildet wird. Daher stimmt die Einteilung eines Wortes in Silben häufig nicht mit der Einteilung in bedeutungstragende Einheiten überein – auch wenn im Deutschen oft dieser Eindruck entsteht. Dies wird dadurch erschwert, dass Morpheme in bestimmten Nomenklaturen auch als Sprachsilben bezeichnet werden. Die in diesem Artikel beschriebene Silbe wird dann zur Abgrenzung als Sprechsilbe bezeichnet. Daneben wird manchmal auch eine Schreibsilbe definiert. Jedes phonologische Wort lässt sich in Silben unterteilen – diese Unterteilung dient als Basis für die schriftsprachliche Worttrennung am Zeilenende, welche durch einen Trennstrich gekennzeichnet wird.
