Pendentif is a triangular building element, which leads the transition between the circular plan of a dome and the square plan of its foundation. The term pendentif comes from the French language, hence also the expression "hanger". The building underneath is usually a quarter of a church or a central building with a square floor plan. More rarely, the floor plan below can be octagonal. Between the pendentifs and the dome is often a cylindrical element, a tambour. Compared to the pendentif constructionally simpler gland form is the trombone. Between pendentif and trompe there are mixed forms. Pendentif dome: the vault surfaces of the pendentifs are drawn in yellow The triangular vault surfaces of the pendentifs are normally only visible from the inside and are usually decorated by paintings or simple reliefs. Als Pendentif bezeichnet man in der Baukunst ein dreieckiges Bauelement, das den Übergang zwischen dem kreisförmigen Grundriss einer Kuppel und dem quadratischen Grundriss ihrer Unterlage führt. Die Bezeichnung pendentif kommt aus der französischen Sprache, daher auch der Ausdruck Hängezwickel. Bei der unten stehenden Bauunterlage handelt es sich meist um die Vierung einer Kirche oder um einen Zentralbau mit quadratischem Grundriss. Seltener kann der unten stehende Grundriss achteckig sein. Zwischen Pendentifs und Kuppel wird oft ein zylinderförmiges Element geschaltet, ein Tambour. Eine im Vergleich zum Pendentif konstruktiv einfachere Zwickelform ist die Trompe. Zwischen Pendentif und Trompe gibt es Mischformen. Pendentifkuppel: die Gewölbeflächen der Pendentifs sind gelb eingezeichnet Die dreieckigen Gewölbeflächen der Pendentifs sind normalerweise nur von innen sichtbar und werden meistens durch Malereien oder einfache Reliefs dekoriert. Am häufigsten ist die Form des Medaillons anzutreffen, wie beispielsweise in der Cappella dei Pazzi in Florenz. Pendentifs sind charakteristisch für die byzantinische Baukunst.
