Phosphides are anionic compounds of phosphorus. They are derived structurally from the phosphanes. Hydrogen atoms are replaced by metal ions, such as lithium or sodium ions. Phosphides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals belong to the Zintl phases. Phosphides of the alkali metals are unstable and moisture sensitive. On the other hand, transition metal phosphides are often very stable, thermally conductive and electrically conductive. Phosphides with a high phosphorus content are usually relatively unstable and semiconductors. There are both isolated phosphorus ions P3- in metal phosphides, as more complex polyphosphide structures, for example in chains, rings or cages of phosphorus atoms. The reason for the large number of polyphosphides is the tendency of the phosphorus to form P-P bonds. The ratio of metal to phosphorus ranges, for example, from alkali metal phosphides from M3P to MP15.

Phosphide sind anionische Verbindungen des Phosphors. Sie leiten sich strukturell von den Phosphanen ab. Dabei sind Wasserstoffatome durch Metallionen, wie Lithium- oder Natriumionen ersetzt. Phosphide der Alkali- und Erdalkalimetalle zählen zu den Zintl-Phasen. Phosphide der Alkalimetalle sind instabil und feuchtigkeitsempfindlich. Dagegen sind Übergangsmetallphosphide häufig sehr stabil, wärmeleitfähig und elektrisch leitfähig. Phosphide mit hohem Phosphoranteil sind meist relativ instabil und Halbleiter. Es gibt in Metallphosphiden sowohl isolierte Phosphor-Ionen P3−, als kompliziertere Polyphosphid-Strukturen, zum Beispiel in Ketten, Ringen oder Käfigen aus Phosphoratomen. Der Grund für die große Anzahl Polyphosphiden liegt in der Neigung des Phosphors zu P–P-Bindungen. Das Verhältnis von Metall zu Phosphor reicht beispielsweise bei Alkalimetallphosphiden von M3P bis MP15.
