pluripotency

Pluripotenz

As pluripotent are called stem cells, which have the ability to develop into cells of the three cotyledons and the germline of an organism. They can differentiate to each type of cell of an organism since they are not yet determined for any particular type of tissue. However, unlike totipotent stem cells, they are no longer able to form an entire organism since pluripotent cells can not form extraembryonic tissues. Sometimes the terms totipotent and pluripotent are not clearly defined. From the origin of the word, however, totipotent means "too powerful", in contrast to pluripotent, which means "too powerful". More recently, pluripotent stem cells have been isolated from a variety of human tissues. Research on stem cells promises possibilities for combating many diseases, but is also controversially discussed under ethical aspects. In a more recent approach, somatic cells are transfected back into a state of pluripotency by transfection.
