Preformation theory or preformation theory is a developmental biology theory, which was represented in antiquity by the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras and reappeared in modern times in the seventeenth century, and then prevailed until the nineteenth century. Another common term was the doctrine of evolution, but "evolution" had a very different meaning from that of today. The preformists assumed that the entire organism was represented in the sperm or in the egg and only had to develop and grow. This was opposed to the theory of epigenesis, according to which the structures and organs of an organism develop only in the course of individual development. Epigenesis had been the dominant opinion since antiquity and into the 17th century, but was then replaced by preformist ideas in the course of the Enlightenment as no longer plausible. It was not until the early nineteenth century that it re-established itself as a dominant view.

Die Präformationslehre oder Präformationstheorie ist eine entwicklungsbiologische Theorie, die in der Antike von dem griechischen Philosophen Anaxagoras vertreten wurde und in der Neuzeit im 17. Jahrhundert wieder auftrat und dann bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein vorherrschend war. Eine weitere damals übliche Bezeichnung war Evolutionslehre, wobei „Evolution“ aber eine ganz andere Bedeutung hatte als heute. Die Präformisten nahmen an, dass der gesamte Organismus im Spermium bzw. im Ei vorgebildet sei und sich nur noch entfalten und wachsen müsse. Dem stand die Theorie der Epigenese gegenüber, wonach sich die Strukturen und Organe eines Organismus erst im Verlauf der Individualentwicklung ausbilden. Die Epigenese war seit der Antike und bis in das 17. Jahrhundert hinein die herrschende Meinung gewesen, wurde dann aber im Zuge der Aufklärung als nicht mehr plausibel durch präformistische Vorstellungen abgelöst. Erst im frühen 19. Jahrhundert konnte sie sich erneut als bis heute herrschende Anschauung etablieren.
