The protagonist describes the performer of the first role in Greek tragedy. The opponent of a protagonist is called an antagonist. Today, the protagonist in literature and film is understood to be the main character, the hero of a novel, a narrative or another literary or cinematic work, or more generally the chief performer of an action or series of actions. The protagonist is usually recognizable by the fact that he undergoes a change in the course of the play, which is further developed by events and experiences. The protagonist does not have to be identical to the title figure of a work, but this is often the case. In general, protagonists are also referred to as laureates in the so-called docu-soaps or pseudo-docus, primarily the private television channel. Im Allgemeinen werden als Protagonisten auch Laiendarsteller in den sogenannten Doku-Soaps oder Pseudo-Dokus, vornehmlich der privaten Fernsehsender, bezeichnet. Hierfür hat sich in den letzten Jahren eine eigene Casting-Szene herausgebildet. Andere Bedeutungen von Protagonist sind: Ich-Erzähler, Meinungsbildner, Bahnbrecher, Neuerer, Vorkämpfer, Vorreiter, Pionier oder Wegbereiter.
