Prothallium

Prothallium is the haploid gametophy of ferns in botany. The prothallium develops from a spore produced by the sporophyte of ferns. It is relatively short-lived, usually only a few millimeters tall, and is hardly noticed by the laity because of its insignificance - and if so, it is frequently confused with a liver moss because of its thallous appearance. The appearance and mode of life of the prothaloids varies considerably from species to species: some are green and operate photosynthesis, others live underground and feed themselves saprophytic, ie dead organic matter.
