Rhodopsin

Rhodopsin, because of its red color also called visual purple, is one of the visual pigments in the retina of the eyes of vertebrates and in the photoreceptors of invertebrates. In the human eye, rhodopsin is responsible for light-dark vision in the rods of the retina. Mutations in the opsin gene can lead to retinitis pigmentosa and hereditary night blindness. However, there are also different photoreceptors which differ in sensitivity to light of certain wavelengths. Thus the color vision is based on the three peaks of the iodopsin, which differ only slightly in their amino acid sequences.
