WHAT DOES SILVAE MEAN IN GERMAN?

Silvae: 'Forests', is used by Latin poets and in its succession as a title for poem collections or as the name of a publication form of occasional literature. This designation is derived from Greek hyle, d. H. 'Wood', in a broader sense: 'fabric', 'material'. What is meant, therefore, is primarily not a "forest" of verses, but "raw material", "impromptu": poems that follow the inspiration of the moment and are not worked out to the last detail. Quintilian, for example, speaks of poets who "want to rip their subject as quickly as possible, and who, following the inspiration of the moment, write from the Stegreif: that is what they call silva." However, this meaning should not be taken too literally, T. rather than a modesty of modesty or expression of a certain casualness. The five books of Silvae of the great Roman poet Publius Papinius Statius are preserved; The titles are also often taken up by Neo-Latin poets, For example, by Vincentius Fabricius.
