Solstitium

solstice

Sonnenwende

A solstice or solstice occurs twice a year. In winter, on the northern hemisphere of the earth on the 21st or 22nd of December, the sun reaches the shortest noon above the horizon, while the summer sunrise on the 20th, 21st, or 22nd of June reaches its midst high above the horizon. In the southern hemisphere the conditions are reversed, during the winter there is summer in the northern hemisphere. During a solar turn, the sun reaches the greatest north or south distance from the sky equator during a solar year. At this moment, the sun reverses its declination movement caused by the skew of the ecliptic, and again approaches the heavenly equator. This maximum declination reaches them twice a year: once north and once south of the sky equator; Depending on the hemisphere, one speaks of the summer or winter solstice.
