A stellarator is a torus-shaped device for the magnetic confinement of a hot plasma, in perspective with the goal of energy production by nuclear fusion. The name of this fusion concept is intended to recall the nuclear fusion as the energy source of the stars. In Japan, however, the term is used only for classical stellarators; Generally, the magnetic field arrangements described below are referred to herein as helical systems. The same goal as the Stellarators is the complementary concept of the Tokamak. Both concepts have been developed because a simple torus-shaped field does not achieve a magnetic plasma confinement suitable for fusion because the radial variation of the field leads to a drift of the particles to the outside. This is due to the internal-external asymmetry arising in a torus: inside, the magnetic field is always stronger than outside because the magnets are closer together. As a result, the helix of each electron or ion has an asymmetry which can be drifted up or down from the magnetic field.

Ein Stellarator ist eine torusförmige Anlage zum magnetischen Einschluss eines heißen Plasmas, perspektivisch mit dem Ziel der Energiegewinnung durch Kernfusion. Der Name dieses Fusionskonzeptes soll an die Kernfusion als Energiequelle der Sterne erinnern. In Japan wird die Bezeichnung allerdings nur für klassische Stellaratoren verwendet; allgemein werden die im Folgenden beschriebenen Magnetfeldanordnungen dort als helikale Systeme bezeichnet. Das gleiche Ziel wie die Stellaratoren verfolgt das dazu komplementäre Konzept des Tokamaks. Beide Konzepte wurden entwickelt, weil man mit einem einfachen torusförmigen Feld keinen für Fusionen geeigneten magnetischen Plasmaeinschluss erreicht, denn die radiale Variation des Feldes führt zu einer Drift der Teilchen nach außen. Das liegt an der in einem Torus notwendigerweise entstehenden Innen-außen-Asymmetrie: Innen ist das Magnetfeld immer stärker als außen, weil dort die Magnete dichter beieinander stehen. Dadurch bekommen die Schraubenbahnen jedes Elektrons oder Ions eine Asymmetrie, die beide nach oben bzw. unten aus dem Magnetfeld herausdriften lässt.
