The Tessar is one of the best known photographic lenses and a brand name. It was calculated by Paul Rudolph and patented on 25 April 1902 for the company Carl Zeiss. More than 100 million lenses of this type have been built since then. The Tessar is from the lens type an anastigmat derived from the cooke-triplet. The Tessar is distinguished by a sharpness which is unmatched for the time of origin. With only small spherical zone errors, best mid-range sharpness and good color correction, it is practically free from astigmatism and image field curvature, whereby the actual optical performance is dependent on production time or calculation. The slight distortion of the figure is sufficient for reproduction claims. The lens is a four-lens system asymmetric in three groups. The two lenses of the front group are mounted with an air distance to each other and thus form an adjacent pair of surfaces with negative strength signs, while the two lenses of the rear group are cemented to form a limb. This results in a considerable increase in performance compared to the simple triplet.

Das Tessar ist eine der bekanntesten Ausführungsarten fotografischer Objektive und eine Markenbezeichnung. Es wurde von Paul Rudolph berechnet und am 25. April 1902 für die Firma Carl Zeiss patentiert. Mehr als 100 Millionen Objektive dieses Typs wurden seitdem gebaut. Das Tessar ist vom Objektivtyp her ein vom Cooke-Triplet abgeleiteter Anastigmat. Das Tessar zeichnet sich durch eine für die Entstehungszeit unerreichte Schärfeleistung aus. Bei nur geringen sphärischen Zonenfehlern, bester Mittenschärfe und guter Farbkorrektion ist es praktisch frei von Astigmatismus und Bildfeldwölbung, wobei die tatsächliche optische Leistung von Produktionszeit bzw. Berechnung abhängig ist. Die geringe Verzeichnung der Abbildung genügt noch Reproduktionsansprüchen. Das Objektiv ist ein in drei Gruppen asymmetrisch aufgebauter Vierlinser. Die beiden Linsen der vorderen Gruppe sind mit Luftabstand zueinander montiert und bilden damit ein Nachbarflächenpaar mit negativen Stärkevorzeichen, wohingegen die beiden Linsen der hinteren Gruppe zu einem Glied verkittet sind. Hierdurch wird gegenüber dem einfachen Triplet eine erhebliche Leistungssteigerung erreicht.
