Arminianism is based on the theological ideas of the Dutch Reformed theologian Jacobus Arminius and his historic supporters known as the Remonstrants. His teachings held to the five solae of the Reformation, but they were distinct in some ways from particular teachings of Martin Luther, Zwingli, John Calvin, and other Protestant Reformers. Jacobus Arminius was a student of Beza at the Theological University of Geneva. Arminianism is known as a soteriological diversification of Protestant Christianity. Dutch Arminianism was originally articulated in the Remonstrance, a theological statement signed by 45 ministers and submitted to the States General of the Netherlands. The Synod of Dort was called by the States General to consider the Five Articles of Remonstrance. These articles asserted that ▪ Salvation was conditioned by the graciously enabled faith of man; ▪ the Atonement is qualitatively adequate for all men, "yet that no one actually enjoys this forgiveness of sins, except the believer...

The definition of Arminian in the dictionary is denoting, relating to, or believing in the Christian Protestant doctrines of Jacobus Arminius, published in 1610, which rejected absolute predestination and insisted that the sovereignty of God is compatible with free will in man. These doctrines deeply influenced Wesleyan and Methodist theology. Other definition of Arminian is a follower of such doctrines.
