A Banderole, has both a literal descriptive meaning for its use by knights and ships, and is also heraldic device for representing bishops. Bannerol, in its main uses is the same as banderole, and is the term especially applied to banners about a yard square carried at the funerals of great men and placed over the tomb. Often it commemorated a particular exploit of the person bearing the coat of arms.

Definition of banderole in the English dictionary

The first definition of banderole in the dictionary is a long narrow flag, usually with forked ends, esp one attached to the masthead of a ship; pennant. Other definition of banderole is a square flag draped over a tomb or carried at a funeral. Banderole is also a ribbon-like scroll or sculptured band bearing an inscription, found esp in Renaissance architecture.
