WHAT DOES BORSTAL MEAN IN ENGLISH?

borstal

Borstal

A borstal was a type of youth detention centre in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. In India, it is known as a borstal school. Indian borstal schools are used exclusively for the imprisonment of minors or juveniles. Their objective is to ensure the care, welfare and rehabilitation of young offenders in an environment suitable for children and to keep them away from the contaminating atmosphere of a prison. The juveniles in conflict with law detained in borstal schools are provided various vocational training and education. The emphasis is given on the education, training and moral influence conducive to their reformation and the prevention of crime. As of 31 December 2011, there are 21 functioning borstal schools in India, with a combined total capacity for 2,218 inmates. In the UK, borstals were run by HM Prison Service and intended to reform seriously delinquent young people. The word is sometimes used loosely to apply to other kinds of youth institution or reformatory, such as Approved Schools and Detention Centres. The court sentence was officially called "borstal training".
