Sabal palmetto

Sabal palmetto, also known as cabbage palm, palmetto, cabbage palmetto, palmetto palm, blue palmetto, Carolina palmetto, common palmetto, swamp cabbage and sabal palm, is one of 15 species of palmetto palm. It is native to the subtropical Gulf coast/south Atlantic coast of the USA, as well as Cuba, the Turks & Caicos Islands, and The Bahamas. In the United States it was originally found throughout Florida and along the Gulf coast, but now occurs both northward through southeastern North Carolina and westward through southeast Texas. It is the state tree of both South Carolina and Florida. The northern extent is to the outer banks of North Carolina up to Cape Hatteras, and the western extent is to south Texas down to the southernmost tip along the Rio Grande. Sabal palmetto is grown successfully throughout the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia.
