Coordinates: 55°58′48″N 3°10′12″W / 55.980089°N 3.170049°W / 55.980089; -3.170049 Leith is a district and former municipal burgh to the north of the city of Edinburgh at the mouth of the Water of Leith in Scotland. Leith has long been regarded as Edinburgh's port. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, in the unitary local authority of the City of Edinburgh. Leith was first referred to by name in the charter authorising the construction of Holyrood Abbey, and it officially became Edinburgh's port in 1329 when Robert I transferred control to the magistrates and citizens of Edinburgh. It remains a busy port, handling over 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year in 2003.
