WHAT DOES OCTANE NUMBER MEAN IN ENGLISH?

octane number

Octane rating

Octane rating or octane number is a standard measure of the performance of motor or aviation fuel. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand. In broad terms, fuels with a higher octane rating are used in high performance petrol engines that require higher compression ratios. In contrast, fuels with lower octane numbers are ideal for diesel engines. High compressibility of the fuel matters in proportion to the compression the engine is designed to generate. Use of petrol with lower octane numbers may lead to engine knocking.

Definition of octane number in the English dictionary

The definition of octane number in the dictionary is a measure of the quality of a petrol expressed as the percentage of isooctane in a mixture of isooctane and n-heptane that gives a fuel with the same antiknock qualities as the given petrol.
