WHAT DOES SLAUGHTERHOUSE MEAN IN ENGLISH?

slaughterhouse

Slaughterhouse

A slaughterhouse or abattoir i/ˈæbətwɑr/ or meatworks is a facility where animals are killed for consumption as food. Slaughterhouses that process meat not intended for human consumption are sometimes referred to as knacker's yards or knackeries. Around nine billion animals are slaughtered every year in the United States, including 35 million cattle and buffalo, 111 million pigs and 8.9 billion poultry. In 2012, 25.8 billion lbs of beef were consumed in the U.S. alone. Around 650 million animals are slaughtered annually in Canada, mostly poultry and including 12–13 million cattle. The world's largest food-processing company is JBS SA in Brazil; in its facilities around the world it slaughters 85,000 head of cattle, 70,000 pigs and 12 million birds every day. Slaughtering animals on a large scale poses significant logistical problems and public health requirements. Public aversion to meat packing in many cultures influences the location of slaughterhouses. In addition, some religions stipulate certain conditions for the slaughter of animals.
