WHAT DOES STRING THEORY MEAN IN ENGLISH?

String theory

In physics, string theory is a theoretical framework in which the point-like particles of particle physics are replaced by one-dimensional objects called strings. String theory aims to explain all types of observed elementary particles using quantum states of these strings. In addition to the particles postulated by the standard model of particle physics, string theory naturally incorporates gravity, and so is a candidate for a theory of everything, a self-contained mathematical model that describes all fundamental forces and forms of matter. Besides this hypothesized role in particle physics, string theory is now widely used as a theoretical tool in physics, and has shed light on many aspects of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. The earliest version of string theory, called bosonic string theory, incorporated only the class of particles known as bosons, although this theory developed into superstring theory, which posits that a connection exists between bosons and the class of particles called fermions. String theory requires the existence of extra spatial dimensions for its mathematical consistency.

10 QUOTES WITH «STRING THEORY»

Famous quotes and sentences with the word string theory.
1
Brian Greene
String theory has the potential to show that all of the wondrous happenings in the universe - from the frantic dance of subatomic quarks to the stately waltz of orbiting binary stars; from the primordial fireball of the big bang to the majestic swirl of heavenly galaxies - are reflections of one, grand physical principle, one master equation.
2
Brian Greene
One of the strangest features of string theory is that it requires more than the three spatial dimensions that we see directly in the world around us. That sounds like science fiction, but it is an indisputable outcome of the mathematics of string theory.
3
Brian Greene
I'd say many features of string theory don't mesh with what we observe in everyday life.
4
David Gross
In order to achieve a true understanding of string theory, some new idea will be required, and most likely, some break with the concepts on which we've traditionally based physical theory.
5
Alan Guth
Our best theory of describing space at a fundamental level is probably string theory.
6
Michio Kaku
In string theory, all particles are vibrations on a tiny rubber band; physics is the harmonies on the string; chemistry is the melodies we play on vibrating strings; the universe is a symphony of strings, and the 'Mind of God' is cosmic music resonating in 11-dimensional hyperspace.
7
Antony Garrett Lisi
There are a lot of good things about string theory, and it's great that some people want to work on it.
8
Roger Penrose
As you say, the way string theory requires all these extra dimensions and this comes from certain consistency requirements about how string should behave and so on.
9
Roger Penrose
In the book, I make the point that here we have string theory and here we have twistor theory and we don't know if either one of them is the right approach to nature.
10
Lee Smolin
Every string theory that's been written down says the speed of light is universal. But other ideas about quantum gravity predict the speed of light has actually increased.
