WHAT DOES YOGH MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Yogh

The letter yogh, was used in Middle English and Older Scots, representing y and various velar phonemes. It was derived from the Old English form of the letter g. In Middle English writing, tailed z came to be indistinguishable from yogh. In Middle Scots the character yogh became confused with a cursive z and the early Scots printers often used z, when yogh was not available in their fonts. Consequently, some Lowland Scots words have a z in place of a yogh. Yogh is shaped similarly to the Arabic numeral three, which is sometimes substituted for the character in online reference works. There is some confusion about the letter in the literature, as the English language was far from standardised at the time. The upper and lower case letters are represented in Unicode by code points U+021C Ȝ latin capital letter yogh and U+021D ȝ latin small letter yogh respectively.

Definition of yogh in the English dictionary

The definition of yogh in the dictionary is a character used in Old and Middle English to represent a palatal fricative very close to the semivowel sound of Modern English y, as in Old English ȝeong. Other definition of yogh is this same character as used in Middle English for both the voiced and voiceless palatal fricatives; when final or in a closed syllable in medial position the sound approached that of German ch in ich, as in knyȝt. After the 14th century this symbol became the modern consonantal y when initial or commencing a syllable, and though no longer pronounced in medial position it is preserved in many words by a modern gh, as in thought.
