Bagaudas

The term bagauda is used to designate the members of numerous bands that participated in a long series of rebellions, known as the rebellions bagaudas, that occurred in Gaul and Hispania during the Low Empire, and that continued developing until century V. Their Members were mainly peasants or colonists evaded from their fiscal obligations, slaves fled or destitute. The word can have a double origin, either a Latin root meaning "thief", or one of Celtic origin that means "warrior." The first news of these revolts has been in Gaul since the third century, concretely since 285. The moment of boom of the bagaudas coincides with the one of greater incidence of the Germanic invasions of century V, in which these revolts are Also move to the Tarraconense and Basque territory, within the framework of the social and economic crisis of the Lower Empire. El término bagauda se utiliza para designar a los integrantes de numerosas bandas que participaron en una larga serie de rebeliones, conocidas como las revueltas bagaudas, que se dieron en Galia e Hispania durante el Bajo Imperio, y que continuaron desarrollándose hasta el siglo V. Sus integrantes eran principalmente campesinos o colonos evadidos de sus obligaciones fiscales, esclavos huidos o indigentes. El vocablo puede tener un doble origen, bien una raíz latina que significa «ladrón», bien una de origen céltico que significa «guerrero». La primera noticia de estas revueltas se tiene en la Galia, desde el siglo III, concretamente desde el año 285. El momento de auge de los bagaudas coincide con el de mayor incidencia de las invasiones germánicas del siglo V, en el que estas revueltas se trasladan también a la Tarraconense y a territorio vascón, en el marco de la crisis social y económica del Bajo Imperio.
