A barangay, also known by its old name, neighborhood, is the smallest unit of local government in the Philippines and is the term in the Filipino languages ​​equivalent to town, district or circumscription. The municipalities and cities of Philippines are made up of barangayes. The term is sometimes abbreviated as Bgy. Brgy. As of December 31, 2006, there were a total of 41,995 barangayes throughout the Philippines.
