Laconia, also known as Lacedemonia, was in ancient Greece a portion of the Peloponnese whose most important city was Sparta. In Archaic Greece the Spartans conquered Messenia, whose inhabitants, the hilotas, were enslaved. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Byzantine Empire and after the Crusades was the home of Theodore, the despot of Morea. At present, Laconia is a peripheral unit of Greece with Sparta as administrative capital. Until 1 January 2011, it was one of the 51 prefectures in which the country was divided.

Laconia, también conocida como Lacedemonia, fue en la antigua Grecia una porción del Peloponeso cuya ciudad más importante fue Esparta. En la Grecia Arcaica los espartanos conquistaron Mesenia cuyos habitantes, los hilotas, fueron esclavizados. En la Edad Media fue parte del Imperio bizantino y después de las Cruzadas fue el hogar de Teodoro, el déspota de Morea. En la actualidad, Laconia es una unidad periférica de Grecia con Esparta como capital administrativa. Hasta el 1 de enero de 2011 fue una de las 51 prefecturas en que se dividía el país.
