The glomeromycetes constitute a group of fungi very little known to the public but ecologically indispensable. These are mycorrhizal fungi living in symbiosis with the roots of a large number of plants. About 90% of the plants form such symbiotic associations with Gloméromycetes. About 150 species have been described, but there are likely to be many more. At the systematic level, the glomeromycetes constitute a division of the reign of the fungi. This division was created recently on the basis of phylogenetic studies; these fungi were formerly classified among the zygomycetes in the order Glomales. This division consists only of the Glomeromycetes class.

Les gloméromycètes constituent un groupe de champignons très peu connus du public mais écologiquement indispensables. Ce sont des champignons mycorhiziens vivant en symbiose avec les racines d'un grand nombre de plantes. Environ 90 % des végétaux forment des telles associations symbiotiques avec des Gloméromycètes. On en a décrit environ 150 espèces, mais il en existe vraisemblablement beaucoup plus. Au niveau systématique les gloméromycètes constituent une division du règne des champignons. Cette division a été créée récemment sur la base d’études phylogénétiques ; ces champignons étaient autrefois classés dans l’ordre des Glomales parmi les zygomycètes. Cette division n'est constituée que de la classe Glomeromycetes.
