अंबर २ संज्ञा पुं०
१. एक सुगंधित वस्तु ।
विशेष—यह ह्वेल मछली की तथा कुथ और समुद्री मछलियों की
अंतड़ियों में जमी हुई चीज है जो भारतवर्ष, अफ्रीका और
ब्राजील के समुद्री किनारों पर बहती हुई पाईजाती है । ह्वेल
का शइकार भी इसके लिये होता है । अंबर बहुत हल्का और
शीघ्र जलनेवाला होता है तथा आँच दिखाते रहने से बिलकुल
भाप होकर उड़ जाता है । इसका व्यवहार औषधियों में होने के
कारण यह नीकोबार (कालापानी का एक द्धीप) तथा भारत
समुद्र के और टापुओं से आता है । प्राचीन काल में अरब,
युनानी और रोमन लोग इसे भारतवर्ष से ले जाते थे । जहाँगीर
ने इससे राजसिंह सन का सुंगंधित किया जाना लिखा है ।
