१. अपवित्रता । अशुद्धता । २. हिंदू शास्त्र
नुसार अशौच की अवस्था ।
विशेष—इन अवस्थाओं में अशौच माना जाता है-(क) मृतक-
संस्कार के पश्चात् मृत के परिवार या सपिंडवालों में वर्णक्रमा
नुसार १०, १२, १५ और ३० दिन तक । (ख) संतान होने
पर भी ऊपर के नियमानुसार । शोक के अशौच को सूतक
और संतानोत्पत्ति के अशौच को वृद्धि कहते है । (ग)
रजस्वला स्त्री को तीन दिन । (घ) मल, मूत्र, चांडाल या
मुर्दें आदि का स्पर्श होने पर स्नानपर्यत । अशौचावस्था में
संध्या तर्पण आदि वैदिक कर्म नहीं किए जाते ।
