विशेष—संबोधन (संबोधि) प्राप्त करने उपरांत शाक्य मुनि
गाया से काशी आए और यहाँ उन्होंने अपने साक्षात् किए हुए
धर्ममार्ग का उपदेश आरंभ किया । 'आर्य सत्य' और 'द्वादश
निदान' (या प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद) के अंतर्गत उन्होंने अपने
सिदधांत की व्याख्य़ा की है । आर्य सत्य के अंतर्गत ही
प्रतिपद् या मार्ग है । इस नवीन मार्ग का नाम, जिसका
मार्ग की व्याख्या भगवान् बुद्घ ने इस प्रकार की है—'हे
भिक्षुओ ! परिव्राजक को इन दो । अंतों का सेवन न करना
चाहिए । वे दोनों अंत कौन हैं ? पहला तो, काम य़ा विषय
में सुख के लिये अनुयोग करना । यह अंत अत्यंत दीन,
ग्रम्य, अनार्य और अनर्थसंहित है । दूसरा है, शरीर को
क्लेश देकर दुःख उठाना । यह भी अनार्य और अनर्थसंहित है । हे भिक्षुओ ! तथागत ने (मैंने) इन दोनों अंतों को त्याग
कर मध्यमा प्रतिपदा (मध्यम मार्ग) को जाना है ।'
मार्ग आर्य सत्यों में चौथा है ।—चार आर्य सत्य ये हैं ।—दुःख,
दुःखसमुदय, दुःखनिरोध और मार्ग । पहली बात तो यह
है कि दुःख है । फिर, इस दुःख का कारण भी है । कारण
है तृष्णा । यह तृष्णा इस प्रकार उत्पन्न होती है । मूल है
अविद्या । अविद्या से संस्कार, संस्कार से विज्ञान, विज्ञान
से नामरूप, नामरूप से षड़ायतन (इंद्रियों और मन)
षडायतन से स्पर्श, स्पर्श से वेदना, वेदना से तृष्णा, तृष्णा से
भव, भव से जाति (जन्म), जाति या जन्म से जरामरण,
इत्यादि । निदानों द्वारा इस प्रकार कारण मालूम हो जाने
पर उसका निरोध आवश्यक है, यह जानना चाहिए । अंत
में उस निरोध का जो मार्ग है, ससे भी जानना चाहिए । इसी
मार्ग को निरोधगामिनी प्रतिपदा कहते हैं । यह मार्ग अष्टांग है । आठ अंग ये हैं ।—सम्यकदृष्टि, सम्यक् संकल्प, सम्यक्वाचा,
सम्यक्कमाँत, सम्यगाजीव, सम्यग्व्यायम, सम्यकस्मृति और
सम्यक्समाधि ।
बौद्ध मत के अनुसार कोई पदार्थ नित्य नहीं, सब क्षणिक हैं ।
नित्य चैतन्य कोई पदार्थ नहीं, सब विज्ञानमात्र है । बौद्ध
अमर आत्मा नहीं मानते, पर कर्मवाद उनका बहुत
जोर है । कर्म के शेष रहने से ही फिर जन्म के बंधन में
पड़ना पड़ता है । यहाँ पर शंका हो सकती है कि जब शरीर के उपरांत आत्मा रहती ही नहीं तब पुनर्जन्म किसका होता है । बौद्ध आचार्य इसका इस प्रकार समाधान करते हैं ।—
मृत्यु के उपरांत उसके सब खंड़—आत्मा इत्यादि सब—नष्ट
हो जाते है; पर उसके कर्म के कारण फिर उन खंड़ों के
स्थान पर नए नए खंड़ उत्पन्न हो जाते हैं और एक नया जीव
उत्पन्न हो जाता है । इस नए और पुराने जीव में केवल
कर्म- संबंध- सूत्र रहता है; इसी से दोनों को एक कहा
करते हैं ।
बोद्ध धर्म की दो प्रधान शाखाएँ हैं—हीनयान और महायान ।
हीनयान बौद्ध मत का विशुद्ध और पुराना रूप है । महायान
उसका अधिक विस्तृत रूप है, जिसके अंतर्गत बहुतदेवोपासना
और तंत्र की क्रियाएँ तक हैँ । हीनयान का प्रचार बरमा,
स्याम और सिंहल मे है; और महायान का तिब्वत, मंगोलिया
चीन, जापान, मंचूरिया आदि में है । इस प्रकार यौद्ध मत के माननेवाले अब भी पृथ्वी पर सबसे अधिक हैं ।
