उ०—राव चँदेरी को भूपाल । जाको सेवत सब भूपाल ।—

विशेष—यह ग्वालियर राज्य के नरवार जिले में है । आज
कल की बस्ती में ४, ५ कोस पर पुरानी इमारतों के खँडहर
हैं । पहले यह नगर बहुत समृद्ध दशा में था; पर अब
कुछ उजड़ गया है । यहाँ की पगड़ी प्रसिद्ध है । चँदेरी में
कपड़े (सूती और रेशमी) अब भी बहुत अच्छे बुने जाते हैं ।
यहाँ एक पुराना किला है जो जमीन से २३० फुट की
ऊँचाई पर है । इसका फाटक 'खूनी दरवाजा' के नाम से
प्रसिद्ध है; क्योंकि पहले यहाँ अपराधी किले की दीवार पर
से ढकेले जाते थे । रामायण, महाभारत और बौद्ध ग्रंथों के दिखने से पता लगता है कि प्राचीन काल में इसके आसपास का प्रदेश चेदि, कलचुरी या हैहय वंश के अधिकार में
था और चेदि देश कहलाता था । जब चंदेलों का प्रताप
चमका, तब उनके राजा यशोवर्मा (संवत् ९८२ से १०१२
तक) ने कलचुरि लोगों के हाथ से कालिंजर का किला
तथा आसपास का प्रदेश ले लिया । इसी से कोई कोई
चँदेरी शब्द की ब्युत्पति 'चंदेल' से बतलाते हैं । अलबरूनी
ने चँदेरी का उल्लेख किया है । सन् १२५१ ईसवी में
गयासुद्दीन बलबन ने चँदेरी पर अधिकार किया था ।
सन् १४३८ में यह नगर मालवा को बादशाह महमूद खिलजी के अधिकार में गया । सन् १५२० में चित्तौर के राणा साँगा
ने इसे जीतकर मेदिनीराव को दे दिया । मेदिनीराव से
इस नगर को बाबर ने लिया । सन् १५८६ के उपरांत बहुत
दिनों तक यह नगर बुंदेलों के अधिकार में रहा और फिर
अंत में सन् १८११ में यह ग्वालियर राज्य के अधिकार में
आया ।
