ऊदल प्रसिद्ध हैं । संस्कृत लेखों सें यह वंश चंद्रात्रेय के नाम से
प्रसिद्ध है ।
विशेष—चंदेलों की उत्पत्ति के विषय में यह कथा प्रसिद्ध है कि
काशी के राजा इंद्रजित् के पुरोहित हेमराज की कन्या हेमवती
बडी सुंदरी थीं । वह एक कुंड में स्नान कर रही थी । इसी
बीच में चंद्रदेव ने उसपर आसक्त होकर उसे आलिंगन
किया । हेमवती ने जब बहुत कोप प्रकट किया, तब चंद्रदेव ने
कहा 'मुझसे तुम्हें जो पुत्र होगा, वह बडा प्रतापी राजा होगा
और उसका राजवंश चलेगा ' । जब उसे कुमारी अवस्था ही में
गर्भ रह गया, तब चंद्रमा के आदेशनुसार उसने अपने पुत्र
को ले जाकर खजुराहो के राजा को दिया । राजा ने उसका
नाम चंद्रवर्मा रखा । कहते हैं कि चंद्रमा ने राजा के लिये एक
पारस पत्थर दिया था । पुत्र बडा प्रतापी हुआ । उसने महोबा
नगर बसाया और कालिंजर का किला बनवाया । खजुराहो के शिलालेखों सें लिखा है कि मरीचि के पुत्र अत्रि को
चंद्रात्रेय नाम वा एक पुत्र था । उसी के नाम पर यह चंद्रात्रेय
नाम का वंश चला । सन् ९०० ईसवी से लेकर १५४५ तक
इस वंश का प्रबल राज्य बुंदेलखंड और मध्य भारत में रहा ।
परमर्दिदेव के समय से इस वंश का प्रताप घटने लगा ।
