एक इतिहासप्रसिद्ध प्राचीन नगर जो उदयपुर के महाराणाओं की प्राचीन राजधानी थी ।
विशेष—अलाउद्दीन के समय में प्रसिद्ध महारानी पद्मावती या
पद्मिनी यहीं कई सहस्र क्षत्रणियों के साथ चिता में भस्म
हुई थीं । ऐसा प्रसिद्ध है कि राणाओं के पूर्वपुरुष बाप्पा
रावल ने ही ईसवी सन् ७२८ में चितौर का गढ़ बनवाया
और नगर बसाया था । सन् १५६८ तक तो मेवाड़ के राणाओं की राजधानी चित्तौर ही रही; उसके पीछे जब अकबर ने
चित्तौर का किला ले लिया, तब महाराणा उदयसिंह ने
उदयपुर नामक नगर बसाया । चित्तौर का गढ़ एक ऊँची
पहाड़ी पर है जिसके चारों ओर प्राचिन नगर के खंडहर
दिखाई पड़ते हैं । हिंदुकाल के बहुत से भवन अभी यहाँ टूटे
फूटे खड़े हैं । किले के अंदर भी बहुत से देवमंदिर, कीर्तिस्तंभ,
खवासिनस्तंभ सिंगारचौरी आदि प्रसिद्ध हैं । राणा कुंभ ने
संवत् १५०५ में गुजरात और मालवा के सुलतान को परास्त
करके यह कीर्तिस्तंभ स्मारक स्वरूप बनवाया था । यह १२२
फुट ऊँचा और नौ खंडों का है ।
