१. एक प्रकार का तज
जो दक्षिण भारत, सिंहल और टेनासरिम में होता है ।
विशेष— सिंहल में ये पेड़ सुगंधितद छाल के लिये बहुत लगाए
जाते हैं । भारतवर्ष में यह जंगलों में ही मिलता है और
लगाया भी जाता है तो बगीचों में शोभा के लिये । कोंकण
से लेकर बराबर दक्षिण की ओर इसके पेड़ मिलते हैं ।
जँगलों में तो इसके पेड़ बडे़ बडे़ मिलते हैं पर लगाए हुए
पेड़ झाड़ के रूप में होते हैं । पत्ते इसके तेजपत्ते ही की तरह
के, पर उससे चौडे़ होते हैं और उनमें बीचवाली खड़ी
नस के समानांतर कई खड़ी नसें होती हैं । इसके फूल
छोटे छोटे होते हैं और गुच्छो में लगते हैं । फूल के नीचे की दिउली छह फाँकों की होती है । सिंहल में जो
दारचीनी के पेड़ लगाए जाते हैं उनके लगाने और दारचीनी
निकालने की रीति यह है । कुछ कुछ रेतीली करैल मिट्टी में
४-५ हाथ के अंतर पर इसके बीज बोए जाते या कलम
लगाए जाते हैं । बोए हुए बीजों या लगाए हुए कलमों को
धूप से बचाने के लिये पेड़ की डालियाँ आस पास गाड़ दी
जाती हैं । ६. वर्ष में जब पेड़ ४ या ५ हाथ ऊँचा हो जाता
है तब उसकी डालियाँ छिलका उतारने के लिये काटी जाती
हैं । डालियों में छूरी से हलका चीरा लगा दिया जाता है
जिसमें छाल जल्दी उचट आवे । कभी कभी डालियों को छुरी के बेंट आदि से थोड़ा रगड़ भी देते हैं । इस प्रकार अलग
किए हुए छाल के टुकड़ों को इकट्ठा करके दबा दबाकर छोटे
छोटे पूलों में बाँधकर रख देते हैं । वे पूले दो या एक दिन
यों ही पडे़ रहते हैं, फिर छालों में एक प्रकार का हलका
खमीर सा उठता है जिसकी सहायता से छाल के ऊपर की
झिल्ली और नीचे लगा हुआ गूदा टेढ़ी छुरी से हटा दिया
जाता है । अंत में छाल को दो दिन छाया में सुखाकर
फिर धुप, दिखाकर रख देते हैं ।
दारचीनी दो प्रकार की होती है— दारचीनी जीलानी और
दारचीनी कपूरी । ऊपर जिस पेड़ का विवरण दिया गया है
वह दारचीनी जीलानी है । दारचीनी कपूरी की छाल में बहुत
अधिक सुगंध होती है और उससे बहुत अच्छा कपूर निकलता है । इसके पेड़ चीन, जापान, कोचीन और फारमोसा द्वीप
में होते हैं और हिंदुस्तान में भी देरहादूल, नीलगिरि आदि
स्थानों में लगाए गए हैं । भारतवर्ष, अरब आदि देशों में
पहले इसी पेड़ की सुगंधित छाल चीन से आती थी, इसी से
उसे दारु + चीनी कहने लगे । हिंदुस्तान में कई पेड़ों की
छाल दारचीनी के नाम से बिकती है । अमिलतास की जाति
का एक पेड़ होता है जिसकी छाल भी व्यापारी दारचीनी के
नाम से बेचते हैं पर वह असली दारचीनी नहीं है । असली
दारचीनी आजकल अधिकतर सिंहल से ही आती है ।
दक्षिण में दारचीनी के पेड़ को भी लवंग कहते हैं यद्यपि
लवंग का पेड़ भिन्न है और जामुन की जाति का है । तज
और दारचीनी के वृक्ष यद्यपि भिन्न होते हैं तथापि एक ही
जाति के हैं । दारचीनी से एक प्रकार का तेल भी निकलता है
जो दवा के लिये बाहर बहुत जाता है ।
२. ऊपर लिखे पेड़ की सुगंधित छाल जो दवा और मसाले के
काम में आती है ।
