दक्ष अदिति के पिता थे, इससे वे देवताओं के आदिपुरुष कहे
जाते हैं । जहाँ ऋग्वेद में सृष्टि की उत्पत्ति का यह क्रम
बतलाया गया है कि अब से पहले ब्रह्मणस्पति ने कर्मकार की
तरह कार्य किया, असत् से सत् उत्पन्न हुआ, उत्तानपद से भू

विधान चलाया ।
गरुड़पुराण मे दक्ष की कथा इस प्रकार है—ब्रह्मा ने सृष्टि की कामना से धर्म, रुद्र, मनु, भृगु तथा सनकादि को मानस-
पुत्र के रूप में उत्पन्न किया । फिर दाहिने अँगूठे से दक्ष को
और बाएँ अँगूठे से दक्षपत्नी को उत्पन्न किया । इस पत्नी से
दक्ष को सोलह कन्याएँ उत्पन्न हुई—श्रद्धा, मैत्री, दया शांति
तुष्टि, पुष्टि, क्रिया, उन्नति, बुद्धि, मेधा, मूर्ति, तितिक्षा, ह्रो,
स्वाहा, स्वधा और सती । दक्ष ने इन्हें ब्रह्मा के मानसपुत्रों
में बाट दिया । रुद्र को दक्ष की सती नाम की कन्या प्राप्त
हुई । एक बार दक्ष ने अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया जिसमें उन्होंने
अपने सारे जामाताओं को बुलाया पर रुद्र को नहीं बुलाया ।
सती बिना बुलाए ही अपने पिता का यज्ञ देखने गई । वहाँ
पिता से अपमानित होने पर उन्होंने अपना शरीर त्याग दिया ।
इसपर महादेव ने क्रुद्ध होकर दक्ष का यज्ञ विध्वंस कर दिया
और दक्ष को शाप दिया कि तुम मनुष्य होकर ध्रुव के वंश
में जन्म लोगे । ध्रुव के वशंज प्रचेतागण ने जब घोर तपस्या की तब उन्हें प्रजासृष्टि करने का वर मिला और उन्होंने
कडुकलन्या मारिषा के गर्भ से दक्ष को उत्पन्न किया । दक्ष ने
चतुविंध मानस सृष्टि की । पर जब मानस सृष्टि से प्रजावृद्धि
न हुई तब उन्होंने वीरण प्रजापति की कन्या असिक्नी को
ग्रहण किया और उससे सहस्र पुत्र और बहुत सी कन्याएँ
उत्पन्न कीं । उन्हीं कन्याओं से कश्यप आदि ने सृष्टि चलाई ।
और पुराणों में भी इसी प्रकार की कथा कुछ हेर फेर के
साथ है ।
