जौहर २ संज्ञा पुं० [हिं० जीव + हर]
१. राजपूतों में युद्ध के समय की एक प्रथा जिसके अनुसार नगर या गढ़ में शत्रु के प्रवेश
का निश्चय होने पर उनकी स्त्रियाँ और बच्चे दहकती हुई
चिता में जल जाते थे ।
विशेष—राजपूत लोग जब देखते थे कि वे गढ़ की रक्षा न कर
सकेंगे और शत्रुओं का अवश्य अधिकार होगा तब वे अपनी
स्त्रियों और बच्चों से विदा लेकर और उन्हें दहकती चिता में
भस्म होने का आदेश देकर आप युद्ध के लिये सुसज्जित होकर
निकल पड़ते थे । स्त्रियाँ भी श्रृंगार करके बड़े भारी दहकते
कुंड में कूदकर प्राण विसर्जन करती थीं । प्रसिद्ध है कि जब
अलाउद्दीन ने चित्तौरगढ़ को घेरा था तब महारानी पद्मिनी
सोलह हजार स्त्रियोँ को लेकर भस्म हुई थी । इसी प्रकार
जब जैसलमेर का दुगँ घिरा था तब नगर की समस्त स्त्रियाँ
और बच्चे अर्थात् २४००० प्राणियो के लगभग क्षण भर में
जल मरे थे ।
